Abstract

The escalating challenges of water scarcity and climate change necessitate a comprehensive evaluation of agricultural water management techniques to ensure drought resilience and sustainable water conservation. This review paper delves into both traditional and modern irrigation methods, water harvesting strategies, and soil moisture conservation practices. It explores the advantages and limitations of surface irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting, runoff harvesting, mulching, and conservation tillage. While traditional methods have long supported agricultural production, their limitations in water use efficiency and potential environmental impacts highlight the need for innovative approaches. Modern techniques, such as precision irrigation and the integration of sensors and automation, offer promising solutions for optimizing water use and enhancing crop productivity. Additionally, water harvesting and soil moisture conservation practices play a vital role in mitigating drought stress and ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability. However, challenges such as financial constraints, lack of awareness, and policy barriers hinder the widespread adoption of these advanced techniques. This review identifies future directions in agricultural water management, emphasizing the integration of diverse approaches, data-driven decision-making, and the development of climate-resilient strategies. By embracing innovation and fostering collaboration, we can create a more sustainable and water-secure future for agriculture, ensuring food security for a growing global population.
